Tour Description:

This is a perfect tour to enjoy some of the stunning landscape the south of Iceland has to offer.

We begin the journey by driving over the plateau of Hellisheiði towards Selfoss town and onwards to the village of Hvolsvöllur where we have our first stop. If the weather conditions allow you will be able to see Hekla volcano and Eyjafjallajökull glacier/volcano on the way.

We continue along the south shore to the community of Skógar where you have the chance to visit the local museum and the magnificent Skógafoss waterfall. From there our journey takes us to Sólheimajökull glacier outlet where we will stop for half an hour.

Next stop is at the village of Vík which is located close to the ocean. Have a walk to the beach and have a closer look at the beautiful basalt sea stacks. We proceed onwards to Seljalandsfoss waterfall behind which you can walk. Before reaching Reykjavík we will pass through the charming villages of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri.

We had a great day - it's a fairly long time spent on the coach, but well worth it. Skógafoss waterfall is huge and we caught plenty of rainbows over the water in our pictures. The village museum nearby is a treasure-trove of items, collected by a gentleman who is now in his nineties, but who likes to greet all the groups who come through, and give a rendition of traditional Icelandic music. There's lots to see outside the museum (traditional houses, beautifully kept) so don't stay inside and almost run out of time, as we did! It's hard to believe that people found a way to live in these beautiful but desolate coastlands before the age of electricity. Next was the black sand beach near Vik, which contrasts stunningly with the whiteness of the surging sea. Despite blue skies, the waves were ferocious on the day we visited, due to a heavy storm the previous night, and a few tour members had their legs washed without warning! After lunch in Vik we stopped at the glacier mouth at Sólheimajökull - and for me, this was the real highlight. I'd seen photos of blue ice caves, but never imagined we'd get to see them first hand, and come away with extraordinary photos. Approaching Seljalandsfoss we thought "another waterfall, we've already done several on this tour and the Golden Circle" - but each one is a unique and beautiful experience, and here there's the chance to walk up and behind the water as it falls. The final leg is merely a drive through coastal fishing villages - less spectacular than all that's gone before, but still interesting to see. Thanks to our guide Silke for the great commentary in both English and German.

We had a wonderfull day, saw beautiful landscapes (waterfalls, mountains, beach) and a very nice museum, where we learned about the life of the Icelanders in the past. The tour was well organised and our driver/guide Silke told us a lot about Iceland and the Icelandic habits. The bus was very comfortable. I would certainly recommend this tour to everybody who wants to see some of the highlights of Iceland.
